Bangkok: The Office of the Narcotics Control Board (ONCB) has confirmed its ongoing discussions with Japanese authorities regarding the high-profile "Nong Thien" case, where a 28-year-old Thai woman was arrested with crystal meth concealed in coffee sachets. The decision on whether she will face indictment is expected on July 31st.

According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Areephak Ngernbumroong, Deputy Secretary-General and spokesperson for the ONCB, disclosed that the suspect, known as "Nong Thien," was apprehended at Fukuoka Airport. The ONCB is in regular contact with Japanese officials as part of a standard procedure in such international narcotics cases.

In a recent development, the Narcotics Suppression Bureau Region 1 interviewed Mr. Thanasak Thongnoi, the father of Nong Thien, and her boyfriend. They provided critical information, including photographs and chat logs from the LINE application. Despite traveling with Nong Thien, her boyfriend was not directly involved in receiving the package. Nong Thien is considered the primary source of information in this case.

The upcoming deadline on July 31st for Japanese prosecutors to decide on the indictment is closely watched. Authorities emphasize the importance of a thorough investigation rather than rushing to meet the deadline. If the indictment is not pursued, Nong Thien may be deported to Thailand. Past cases suggest that individuals involved in similar offenses are often blacklisted from entering Japan.

In a related matter, a Vietnamese suspect was recently arrested in a case involving meth smuggled with tamarind paste. Connections between these cases remain unclear, as further investigation is necessary. Japanese officials have charged Thien with drug-related offenses and customs violations.
