Bangkok: Thailand's road safety authorities on Monday reported 241 fatalities and 1,313 injuries during the first six days of the New Year holiday period, as the country concludes its annual "seven dangerous days" monitoring window.
According to Thai News Agency, between Dec. 30 and Jan. 4, the Road Safety Center recorded 1,364 accidents nationwide. Speeding was the leading cause of incidents, accounting for 32.5% of the accidents, while motorcycles were involved in nearly 69% of all crashes.
The capital, Bangkok, recorded the highest number of fatalities with 20 deaths. Meanwhile, Phuket, a major tourist hub, experienced the highest frequency of accidents and injuries, totaling 50 accidents and 53 injuries respectively.
Data showed that approximately 85% of accidents occurred on straight roads, with young adults aged 20-29 representing the largest group of casualties. Officials have ordered continued strict enforcement at checkpoints today as the final wave of travelers returns to major cities, focusing on preventing drowsy driving and speeding.
