Bangkok: On the initial day of registration for party-list Members of Parliament (MPs) in Thailand, 1,502 individuals registered, while 34 political parties submitted 73 candidates for the position of Prime Minister.
According to Thai News Agency, the Election Commission of Thailand (ECT) provided a summary of the first day's registration activities, highlighting the enthusiasm and engagement of political parties. In addition to the party-list registrations, a total of 3,199 candidates registered for constituency MPs over the course of two days, vying for positions across 400 constituencies.
Acting Sub-Lieutenant Phasakon Siriphakayaporn, Deputy Secretary-General of the Election Commission, offered insights into the registration process. He reported that by December 28, 2025, at 4:45 PM, 52 political parties had completed their applications for party-list submissions before 8:30 AM, each nominating one candidate, culminating in a total of 1,502 candidates. The registration window is set to remain open until December 31, 2025.
In addition to the MP registration, Acting Sub-Lieutenant Phasakon discussed the referendum process. The Prime Minister is anticipated to announce the referendum date on January 2, 2026. He urged the public to remain aware of the separate registration processes for voting, emphasizing that advance voting for parliamentary elections will occur on February 1, 2026, with registration available from December 20, 2025, to January 5, 2026. However, the referendum will be conducted nationwide on a single day, February 8, 2026, without advance voting options. Registration for voting outside the district is scheduled from January 3-5, 2026.
As part of the referendum timeline, the number of eligible overseas voters and their registration locations will be announced on February 4, 2026, preceding the final voting on February 8, 2026.
