Bangkok: An opportunity for Thailand to host the first "Disneyland" in Southeast Asia could transform its tourism sector into a world-class landmark, creating 100,000 jobs and generating significant revenue for the nation.
According to Thai News Agency, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport, Pipat Ratchakitprakarn, emphasized the potential of this initiative, highlighting Thailand's position as a "key option" for Disneyland's expansion into Southeast Asia. The Thai Embassy in Washington, D.C. has suggested that this is not merely a marketing strategy but a move towards economic diplomacy. Pipat noted Thailand's readiness with its infrastructure, including airports, high-speed rail, ports, and road networks, capable of accommodating a large influx of tourists should the project come to fruition.
The proposed model for "Disneyland Thailand" will transcend the traditional amusement park concept by establishing a large-scale Entertainment and Lifestyle Hub. This hub will integrate an amusement park, a concert hall, and a world-class sports stadium with a seating capacity of over 80,000. The aim is to attract global events, encouraging repeat visits through concerts by renowned artists and international sporting events. This approach aligns with modern tourism trends, leveraging sports, music, and entertainment as economic drivers that benefit hotels, transportation, restaurants, and related tourism businesses.
Mr. Pipat assured that the project is devoid of any illicit activities, such as casinos, and is designed as a legitimate infrastructure for tourism and events. The vision is to rebrand Thailand as a regional hub for Music and Sport Tourism. If realized, the project is projected to draw approximately 10 million tourists annually, generating over 150 billion baht in revenue, and potentially increasing Thailand's GDP growth by around 1% per year.
The Thai Embassy's communication of this concept is perceived as an indication of international policy, signaling Thailand's readiness to "open a deal" on a global platform. If successful, the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) could evolve from an industrial economic zone into a world-class entertainment landmark in Asia.
