Thanaporn Sriyakul Urges Action to Restore Confidence Amid Fuel Supply Concerns

Bangkok: Thanaporn Sriyakul, Director of the Institute for Policy and Political Analysis, has emphasized the importance of restoring public confidence in the midst of growing concerns about fuel supplies in Thailand. She asserts that easing transportation regulations, increasing the frequency of vehicle routes, and accelerating production are effective strategies to address the current situation.

According to Thai News Agency, Associate Professor Thanaporn Sriyakul addressed the recent social media uproar over perceived fuel shortages at gas stations. She clarified that the issue is not due to an actual shortage of fuel, but rather a systemic challenge within the transportation sector, which has struggled to meet the rapidly rising demand.

Thanaporn expressed her confidence in government data, which confirms that Thailand has sufficient domestic oil supplies and no immediate threat of fuel shortages. She attributed the temporary depletion at some gas stations to public panic buying, which led to excessive fuel purchases.

She commended the government's approach to resolving the problem by increasing oil transport trips to replenish stock at service stations more swiftly. Thanaporn emphasized that in extraordinary circumstances, it is essential for the government to adapt its strategies rather than relying on traditional methods.

Highlighting the normalcy of panic during crises, Thanaporn stated that it is crucial for the government to be proactive and take immediate action. She believes that consistent implementation of these measures will help resolve the situation.

Regarding energy sources, Thanaporn noted that the global oil market is adjusting, with increased oil supplies from Russia, Africa, and other regions entering the market, thereby ensuring Thailand's continued access to oil. However, she stressed that the government must focus on building public confidence. Despite having sufficient oil reserves, if the public cannot access fuel, the perception of a problem will persist.

Thanaporn also recommended accelerating fuel distribution to service stations nationwide, particularly smaller, local stations that are not part of major brands. These stations often face more severe impacts and require support to resume normal operations.

"The key issue isn't just having oil in storage, but how to get the oil to gas stations and allow people to fill up as quickly as possible so that the situation can return to normal. Building confidence is crucial," Thanaporn stated. She urged the government to calm the public and convey that there is no need to hoard fuel, as Thailand has sufficient oil for everyone.
