Trial Service of Motorway M82 Opens to Public

Bangkok: Free trial service of ‘Motorway M82’ is now open, as announced by the Department of Highways. The motorway connects the southern Kanchanaphisek Ring Road from the Bang Khun Thian Interchange to Ekkachai, and the service is available to the public starting at 4:00 PM on October 22, 2025. It is anticipated that 60,000 to 70,000 vehicles will utilize this service daily, potentially saving travelers 30 to 45 minutes.

According to Thai News Agency, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport, Mr. Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn, officiated at the flag-raising ceremony, noting that the trial run aims to enhance traffic efficiency and create a high-standard transportation network to the South. The 10.3-kilometer stretch is now complete and will remain toll-free until 2028. Four-wheel vehicles can travel at a speed limit of 80 kilometers per hour, while larger vehicles are restricted to 65 kilometers per hour. The motorway is expected to alleviate congestion on the heavily trafficked Rama II Road, which sees about 200,000 vehicles daily. Mr. Phiphat also highlighted that the entire 45-kilometer Rama II Road project is slated for completion by June 2026.

Entry and exit points for the M82 motorway are strategically placed to facilitate smooth travel. On the outbound side, drivers can access the motorway from the southern Kanchanaphisek Ring Road or from Rama 2 Road near Boonthavorn Department Store. Inbound travelers from Mahachai or those turning from Ekkachai Road can enter the M82 elevated road near Wat Rat Rangsan.

Mr. Piyapong Jiwattanakulpaisan, Director-General of the Department of Highways, emphasized the ongoing construction efforts for the remaining section from Ekkachai to Ban Phaeo, which is over 88 percent complete. The Department is committed to maintaining high safety standards and aims to complete the project by mid-2026. Efforts are also underway to expedite the bidding process for private investors to manage operations and maintenance, with full operation and toll collection expected by 2028. This development is anticipated to enhance travel efficiency and support economic growth in the South.
