Washington: U.S. President Donald Trump has ordered the release of classified intelligence documents, claiming they show Chinese interference in the U.S. election. This marks a renewed attack on election security concerns, despite U.S. intelligence agencies having previously concluded there was no evidence that Beijing manipulated the 2020 presidential election results, which Trump lost.
According to Thai News Agency, in the 25-minute televised address, Trump emphasized his efforts to make election security a central political issue leading up to the November midterm elections, a time when Republicans must retain their congressional majority and face the risk of losing control of one or both houses.
In the past, President Trump has pressured Republican members of Congress to expedite the passage of legislation to establish new regulations regarding voter identification and citizenship requirements, despite long-standing investigations confirming that election fraud in the United States is extremely rare.
Mr. Trump stated that he was releasing sensitive intelligence information revealing that China had illegally accessed the files of 220 million American voters, including names, addresses, and other registration data. He also alleged that members of U.S. intelligence intentionally concealed information about the scope of China's operations.
However, these allegations contradict a publicly released 2021 assessment by the U.S. intelligence community, which stated that there was no indication of any foreign actors attempting or succeeding in altering any technical systems of the 2020 presidential election, including voter registration, ballots, vote counting, or election results.
