Trump Threatens Intervention Amid Escalating Protests in Iran

Washington: President Donald Trump has declared his readiness to support protesters in Iran if the Iranian government continues its forceful crackdown on demonstrations. In a recent statement on TruthSocial, Trump emphasized that the United States is prepared to intervene should Iran persist in what he described as the brutal shooting and killing of peaceful protesters.

According to Thai News Agency, Trump's announcement follows reports from media outlets and human rights organizations about fatalities resulting from the ongoing unrest in Iran. The country is witnessing its largest wave of protests in three years, a response to deteriorating economic conditions. Iran's semi-official news agency reported that three protesters were killed and 17 wounded during violent clashes with police after demonstrators attacked a police headquarters, setting police vehicles ablaze.

The protests, initially sparked by shop owners' dissatisfaction with the government's economic management, have since spread across multiple provinces. The economic grievances are largely driven by the sharp depreciation of the Iranian rial and soaring prices. While the government has attempted to quell the unrest by offering direct negotiations with union leaders and merchants, no specific plans have been revealed.

Iran's economic troubles have intensified since the U.S. reinstated sanctions in 2018, following Trump's decision during his first term to withdraw from the 2015 nuclear deal involving Iran and global powers.
