UN Secretary-General Calls for Inclusive AI Benefits at New Delhi Summit

New delhi: The UN Secretary-General reiterated that AI technology must benefit everyone, not be controlled by a few countries or a few billionaires. UN Secretary-General Ant³nio Guterres opened the AI Impact Summit in New Delhi today, thanking India for leading the way in making this AI conference the first of its kind in the World's Southern region (a group of developing countries). He stated that this brings the summit closer to the reality that is transforming much of the world. The future of AI cannot be left to the decisions of a handful of countries or a few billionaires.

According to Thai News Agency, the UN Secretary-General informed the assembly that the UN General Assembly had made two important decisions by 2025. Firstly, the establishment of an independent International Scientific Committee on AI, comprised of 40 leading experts from various regions and fields, who have declared unequivocally that AI must be accessible to all, that excitement and fear must be replaced by shared evidence, and that knowledge gaps must be closed. The Secretary-General called for support from all parties in the work of this committee. Secondly, the launch of a global dialogue forum on AI governance within the UN. This forum will provide a voice for all nations, including the private sector, academia, and civil society, in creating measures to protect human actions, ensure governance, and guarantee accountability. The first meeting will be held in Geneva, Switzerland, this July.

The UN Secretary-General took this opportunity to call for the establishment of a Global AI Fund to build fundamental capacity in developing countries, covering skills, data, access to computing technology, and an inclusive ecosystem. The fund aims for $3 billion (approximately 93.4 billion baht), and the Secretary-General emphasized that AI must be beneficial and safe for all.
