Upper Thailand Braces for Severe Weather with Thunderstorms and Strong Winds

Bangkok: The Meteorological Department has issued a warning as the upper part of Thailand prepares to face severe weather conditions, including thunderstorms, strong winds, and hail. Bangkok and its surrounding areas are expected to experience thunderstorms affecting 40% of the region.

According to Thai News Agency, the forecast for the next 24 hours indicates that the northern part of the country will be hit by thunderstorms, accompanied by strong gusts of wind, hail, and lightning in certain areas. Residents have been advised to exercise caution during these storms and to avoid traveling through areas prone to flooding, particularly low-lying zones with limited drainage. Short-term flooding may occur due to insufficient drainage capacity. People are also urged to steer clear of open spaces, large trees, and weak structures such as billboards. Farmers have been warned to secure their fruit trees and prepare for potential damage to crops and livestock. These weather conditions are attributed to a moderate high-pressure area from China impacting Vietnam and the South China Sea, causing southeastern and southwestern winds to cover the northern and upper northeastern regions. Meanwhile, temperatures in upper Thailand remain high.

In the southern parts of Thailand, heavy rain is predicted in certain areas due to southeasterly winds affecting the Gulf of Thailand, the South, and the Andaman Sea. Sea conditions are expected to be relatively calm, with waves less than 1 meter high, though they may exceed 2 meters during thunderstorms. Sailors have been advised to avoid areas with storm conditions.

Dust and smog levels in the northern and northeastern regions are reported to be moderate to high, with the possibility of improvement due to anticipated rainfall.

The regional weather forecast highlights varying conditions across different areas. Bangkok is expected to remain generally hot with thunderstorms in 40% of the area, while the northern and northeastern regions are likely to see thunderstorms in 60% of the area. The central region will experience similar conditions with thunderstorms affecting 40% of the area. The eastern and southern parts of the country are also predicted to face thunderstorms, with some areas experiencing heavy rain and strong winds.
