Urgent Assessment of Agricultural Impact in Seven Thai-Cambodian Border Provinces

Bangkok: The Ministry of Agriculture is conducting an urgent evaluation of the agricultural damage in seven provinces along the Thai-Cambodian border. This initiative aims to mobilize necessary resources to assist affected farmers swiftly. The ministry is prioritizing the promotion of short-cycle crops to provide additional income during the recovery period. Meanwhile, rubber farmers are set to receive financial support from the Rubber Authority of Thailand (RAOT).

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Winairoj Sapsongsuk, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, reported on the progress of assessing agricultural damage in the provinces of Trat, Chanthaburi, Sa Kaeo, Buriram, Surin, Si Saket, and Ubon Ratchathani. He has directed related agencies to closely monitor the impact, particularly in the aftermath, to ensure rapid assistance reaches as many farmers as possible.

For immediate relief, the Ministry of Agriculture plans to focus on generating income for farmers by promoting the cultivation of short-cycle crops. These crops offer quick yields, providing farmers with a source of income during their recovery. Additionally, the Rubber Authority of Thailand (RAOT) is preparing to activate the Rubber Farmer Relief Fund to support rubber farmers impacted by both the border situation and floods in the South.

The Permanent Secretary further noted that despite the ministry operating under a caretaker government, they have received guidelines from the Cabinet regarding budget disbursements. These guidelines ensure fiscal discipline and adherence to Cabinet resolutions, allowing for prudent spending without hindering urgent tasks.

Earlier in the day, Mr. Winairoj led a merit-making ceremony at the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives. The ceremony, which involved offering rice and dried food to 72 monks, was held to celebrate the New Year 2026. Executives, civil servants, and ministry staff participated in the event.

Mr. Winairoj highlighted that making merit during the New Year is a morale booster for officials. He stated that the ministry's work this year will focus on supporting farmers by providing land for cultivation, managing water resources, developing quality plant and animal varieties, improving fisheries, and reducing costs while increasing income to ensure long-term sustainability in the Thai agricultural sector.
