Varawut Initiates 20 Billion Baht Relief for SMEs Amid Energy Crisis

Bangkok: Varawut Silpa-archa, the Minister of Industry, has announced a strategic move to alleviate the financial strain on small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) caused by the ongoing energy crisis. The initiative involves injecting 20 billion baht through the Small and Medium Enterprise Development Bank of Thailand (SME D Bank) at a fixed interest rate of 3% for three years. According to Thai News Agency, this intervention is focused on three critical dimensions to support SMEs during this challenging period. The first dimension emphasizes 'Access to funding', providing businesses with a low-interest rate of 3% annually. This funding, aimed at enhancing liquidity and encouraging a shift towards clean energy, includes three loan products designed to cater to different business needs. The 'SME Green Productivity Loan' offers up to 30 million baht for investments in clean technology, the 'SME Empowerment Loan' provides up to 1 million baht without collateral for smaller businesses, and the 'Beyond SME Wing s Loan' focuses on upgrading business efficiency with loans up to 30 million baht. The second dimension, 'Assistance for vulnerable borrowers', introduces a "3 Reductions" strategy-cutting down the principal, interest rates, and installment amounts, tailored to the specific needs of each business. This approach aims to ease the financial burden, preserve jobs, and provide a pathway for recovery. The third dimension involves 'Upskilling and reskilling entrepreneurs', aligning them with the current economic landscape and promoting sustainable practices. This aspect of the program is crucial for adapting to the new economy and fostering long-term growth. Mr. Varawut emphasized the importance of swift loan disbursement, urging SME D Bank to streamline processes and relax conditions to expedite financial support. The 20 billion baht is readily available, eliminating the need for additional funding requests. SMEs seeking assistance can access services through SME D Bank branches, the Call Center, or the Ministry of Industry's offices nationwide. Mr. Varawut reiterated the unified effort to facilitate and connect these initiatives for the benefit of SMEs.
