Worker Fatality Halts Cable Tunnel Construction in Bangkok

Bangkok: Construction of a cable tunnel has been suspended for two days after a landslide killed a worker. The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) has temporarily halted work on an underground cable tunnel after a landslide resulted in the death of a Myanmar worker during the night.

According to Thai News Agency, the landslide occurred on Sukhumvit Road, inbound lanes, before Bang Na BTS station. The incident happened when workers were excavating an underground tunnel for electrical wiring at a depth of 8-10 meters. During their attempt to dig down approximately 14 meters, soil from both sides collapsed, completely burying one worker. He lost consciousness and eventually died. Rescue workers labored for over an hour to retrieve the body. Forensic investigators have been called to the scene, and the supervising engineer and other relevant parties will be questioned to determine the cause of the incident.

The Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA) has mandated a temporary two-day suspension of construction to review measures and establish stricter safety guidelines. Traffic in the area has now returned to normal.
