School Milk Quota Adjustment Requested After Surplus of 127 Tons/Day

Bangkok dairy cooperative group 6 submitted a request to adjust the school milk quota:angkok Dairy Cooperative Group 6 submitted a request to adjust the school milk quota, citing a milk surplus of 127 tons per day severely impacting farmers.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Subin Pom-ocha, Chairman of the Nong Pho Dairy Cooperative Limited (under Royal Patronage), stated that he has submitted a request to Mr. Winairoj Thrapsongsook, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, to adjust the school milk allocation quota to align with the raw milk supply in each area.

Mr. Surapong Pienprasop, Chairman of the Tha Muang Dairy Cooperative Limited, stated that the quota allocation, based on a structure of 7 regional groups, does not reflect actual production potential. Some areas received 100% allocation, while regional group 6 received only approximately 48%. This results in a significant surplus of milk, and there is a possibility that the new criteria may reduce the allocation to as low as 19%.

The cooperative group proposed adjusting the allocation criteria to align with production volume, area, and logistics systems. They also suggested measures to increase the use of raw milk, such as extending the school milk consumption days from 260 days to 365 days per year, which would help absorb almost 400 tons of raw milk per day. Additionally, expanding the school milk program to cover secondary education could alleviate the problem in the long term.

The network of dairy cooperatives in Area 6 is currently awaiting a meeting with the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, in his capacity as Chair of the Milk and Dairy Products Policy Committee (Milk Board) and Chair of the Committee on Supplementing Milk for Children and Youth, along with other relevant committees. The purpose is to express their concerns and opinions before considering urgent solutions.
